WORKSAFE Victoria says labour hire firms have long-established OHS responsibilities regardless of whether they have day-to-day management control over the people they employ.
According to WorkSafe, the failings of OHS by some firms are causing serious injuries and big fines to be imposed by the courts. Instances which are particularly found in the case in industries where there are seasonal surges in demand for workers.
WorkSafe says it has been working with the labour hire industry over the years to improve standards and while there has been improvement, more is needed. As every year thousands of people working under these arrangements are injured and die.
Labour hire firm are obligated to ensure the people they are sending out have the skills required for the commissioned work, and the host employer’s workplace is as safe as reasonably practicable.
